Getting Started

Am I a candidate?

Suitability for laser hair removal depends on factors such as hair colour, skin type, recent sun exposure, medications, medical history and the treatment area. Results and the number of treatments required vary from person to person. An initial consultation is required to assess suitability and develop an appropriate treatment plan.

Your initial consultation

Before any treatment begins, you'll meet with a member of our team for a comprehensive consultation. We'll review your skin type, hair characteristics, medical history and treatment goals to determine whether laser hair removal with the Athena SuperIce™ system is right for you.

Where appropriate, a test patch will be completed to help determine suitability and select safe treatment settings.

  • Shave the treatment area approximately 24 hours before your appointment.
  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning for two weeks before and after treatment. Recently tanned skin cannot be treated.
  • Stop self-tanning products at least seven days before treatment and remove any remaining product.
  • Do not wax, pluck or bleach hair in the treatment area for four to six weeks before treatment. Shaving is permitted.
  • Avoid sensitizing skincare products for five to seven days before treatment.
  • Avoid chemical peels and other laser procedures in the area for two weeks before and after treatment.
  • Avoid acids, hydroquinone, retinol, retinoids, Tazorac® and Differin® for five to seven days before treatment.

Post-treatment instructions

Right after treatment

  • Temporary redness, swelling and sensitivity around the follicles are common — the area may feel similar to a mild sunburn.
  • A cool compress, wrapped ice pack, or a soothing product such as aloe vera can help if needed.
  • Do not scratch or pick at the treated area.
  • Avoid sun exposure for seven to 14 days and apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher.
  • Avoid hot water, hot tubs and saunas for 24 to 48 hours.
  • Avoid excessive sweating and strenuous exercise for at least two hours; sensitive skin should wait 24 hours.

In the days that follow

  • Avoid acids, retinoids and other irritating products until redness and swelling resolve.
  • Makeup may be used if the skin is not broken or irritated.
  • Do not wax, tweeze or use electrolysis between treatments. Shaving is permitted.
  • Avoid moisturizer for at least two hours, and deodorant on treated underarms for six to 12 hours (24 hours for sensitive skin).
  • Avoid tight clothing over the treated area for the first 24 hours.
  • Treated hairs may shed five to 14 days after treatment — this is not new hair growth.
  • Contact our clinic for significant pain, blistering, burns, spreading redness, or signs of infection.

The initial consultation includes an assessment of your skin, hair, medical history and treatment goals. A test patch will be completed when appropriate to help determine suitability and select safe treatment settings.
